Mälaren is a large inland lake in Stockholm with access to the sea and is Sweden’s most species-rich lake. However, perhaps the best sport fishing can be found at Lake Gömmaren, which is stocked with game fish, is ideal for fly fishing, and also allows for spinning from the shore.
Flottsbro offers facilities such as camping, cabins, sandy beaches, bathing jetties, and a guest dock for boats, making it a perfect place for a fishing trip, an overnight stay, or a longer vacation.
Cottages and Canoe rental

Fishing Waters and Regulations
Lakes Albysjön and Tullingesjön
It is free to fish with handheld gear such as fishing rods, flies, and spinners without a permit. For fishing enthusiasts, there are also great opportunities for sport fishing, with Lake Albysjön particularly appealing due to its variety of fish species. You might even be lucky enough to catch a lamprey, a rare species not found in many places in Sweden.
At Flottsbro’s inn, you can rent canoes for more mobility on the lake, though fishing from piers and the shoreline is also excellent. Fishing from the pier to the right of the swimming beach is a particularly popular summer pastime for children.
Fishing for Rainbow Trout at Lake Gömmaren
Near Flottsbro, you’ll also find Lake Gömmaren, where you can fish for stocked species like rainbow trout and Arctic char. The lake is a popular destination for sport anglers and is surrounded by beautiful nature. A fantastic spot for both fishing enthusiasts and nature lovers. Surrounded by forest and the scent of bog, it feels like a mountain lake in northern Sweden—you can even find cloudberries here in late summer!
Spinning works well, but the most recommended method for catching game fish is fly fishing.

Mälaren – A Gem in Roslagen – A Large Inland Lake with a Sea Fishing Feel
Fishing with handheld equipment is free in Lake Mälaren and the archipelago and may be done with rods, spinning rods, and similar gear, with a line carrying a maximum of 10 hooks. Mälaren offers excellent sport fishing opportunities. While sport fishing is free in Mälaren, there are some limitations. In so-called private waters, fishing rights belong to individuals.
In some areas around Mälaren, fishing from shore is possible, but for a truly enjoyable fishing experience, renting a boat is recommended. With Sweden’s long, light summer nights, it’s an unbeatable experience. Boats for fishing in Mälaren can be rented through Skipperi—see the link below.
Fishing methods that are not permitted include boat fishing using nets, trolling, or drag rowing, as these require a license. However, fishing with handheld equipment from a boat is allowed.
Fish Species
Mälaren is Sweden’s most species-rich lake, with 33 naturally occurring fish species. There are also stocked species such as lake trout, Arctic char, salmon, and sea trout. Common fish in the lake include: bleak, white bream, bream, pike, perch, roach, smelt, zander, burbot, tench, rudd, and crucian carp.
Rarer species include asp, grayling, fourhorn sculpin, and spined loach.
