Downhill Skiers’ Traffic Rules

  1. Be alert – show consideration. Act in a way that does not put others at risk.
  2. Adjust your speed and riding style according to the terrain, your equipment, the weather, and your own skill level.
  3. Choose your line. You coming from above must give way to skiers and riders below you.
  4. Start carefully! Check uphill and downhill to make sure the slope is clear before you set off.
  5. Only stop where you are visible. If you need to stop, do so in a place where you are clearly seen and where others can pass safely. If you fall, clear the slope as quickly as possible.
  6. Pass with plenty of space. Keep enough distance so the skier or rider you are passing has enough room.
  7. Climb beside the slope. Always make your way up alongside the slope, especially when visibility is poor.
  8. Respect signs. Rules and instructions on the slopes are there for your safety and the safety of others – follow them!
  9. Lend a hand. You must assist in case of an accident. If you are involved in an accident, you are required to provide your name and address.
  10. Report to the staff. Inform the on-site staff if you notice any obstacles, hazards, or accidents on the lifts or slopes.

Remember: If a skier or rider breaks the resort’s rules, the resort may block their lift pass.

Downhill Skiing Safety

  • Downhill skiing is a sport that carries certain risks for the participant.
  • Make sure you have complete and secure equipment that won’t come loose. Check with the staff or the on-site ski shop if needed.
  • Wear an approved helmet and, preferably, a back protector.
  • The ski resort’s snowmobiles, piste machines, and other vehicles/equipment may be present on the slopes even during opening hours.
  • Crossed skis on the slope indicate an accident.
  • Hold your poles in your outside hand on a button lift or in front of you on a chairlift to avoid injuring the lift operator or others.
  • Slope, snow, and weather conditions can deteriorate so quickly that hazards may arise even on a marked slope.
  • SLAO strongly advises against skiing with a child carrier/harness, as it involves significant risks.
  • Be aware of the risk of dropped skis and other equipment on chairlifts.
  • Wind and speed increase the risk of frostbite.
  • Show special consideration for children, who often make quick and unexpected movements.
  • The ski patrol, in their blue and yellow uniforms, works for your safety and enjoyment.
  • Good technique reduces the risk of injury – take ski lessons.
  • Waxed and sharpened skis and snowboards make skiing safer, easier, and more fun.
  • The ski school may have priority on certain lifts.
